City of churches

from THE SQUALL by Damned Men

lyrics

We spent the nights running down same old streets, chasing shadows in our peripherals.
Our eyes not set on a goal, there was never an ending and no beginning worth a mention.
Nothing to pass on except the same old stories and tired jokes.

Nothing said that wasn’t tongue in cheek. Drank the dry, the sweet and everything in between.
Cigarettes like southern stars glowed, lit the way for feet to drag us home.
The last drinks bell tolled.

We did ache for the drink but I was fleeing fast from any change.
Although we did ache for the drink, I was fleeing fast from any change.

I was oh so tired of the showing of skin.
The bar closed everyone seemed different in the light of day.

Although we did ache for the drink, I was fleeing fast from any change.
Killing nights it was a place gruesome, a place not very wonderful to be.
We were mates and to the glass only slaves, brimming with the booze bought by others.
The bar closed and everything had changed, my body bruised from rounds I couldn’t recall.

And I felt a sharp pain in my gut, I could no longer keep my eyes shut.
When I woke up, when I came to, I was living in the low light of lamps.
Breathing the hot air of tales told, more than once and to more than a few.
The change came crashing in like a flood and I was cast afar in the wake.
There’s nothing further now from those nights and I could never miss them a bit.
There’s no god in this city of churches and no message following the searching.

For once a faceless goon with all ties cut, my glass is dry of any want.
The seasons came and seasons passed, the tide did change and I was cast.
From the night, the rising sun showed no pride in what id done.
This faceless goon, my memories are blurred, my ties now cut my bridges are burned.

No god in this city of churches.
